Happy Leap Day! Or more importantly, Happy 1.9 day!
Yep, just a few hours ago Mojang released Minecraft 1.9 into your client. It’s as simple as starting up Minecraft, clicking play, and it will automatically download it for you.
But all of your servers will still be running 1.8 so you won’t be able to log onto them. Fortunately, it’s very easy to setup a 1.8 profile on your client so you can still play on your favorite server. To do this, start up your client and select New Profile in the bottom-left corner:
Then, type a name to help you remember it’s a 1.8 profile, select release 1.8.9 under “Use version” and finally click Save Profile.
Now you’ll be ready to play on any server until they’re updated to 1.9!
. . .
Some servers will be installing a sort of “protocol hack” in the following days/weeks. This will allow you to log onto their server using a 1.9 client, but you’ll still only see 1.8 features. Protocol Hacks are often very buggy and can cause corruption. We’re looking into it, but we’ll most likely be staying on 1.8 until 1.9 is fully ready. But we’ll see. 1.9 is a very big update and it’s going to be a little while before Spigot/Bukkit/other-modified-server-type is updated to allow 1.9 plugins. It could potentially be summertime or even fall or winter! Or it could be fast. There’s really no way of knowing. So have some patience, play some Single Player or a Vanilla Server for now and we hope to see you on Surrender!
EDIT: Spigot/Craftbukkit was updated for 1.9 already! But we are waiting until all of our plugins are fully updated and ready to go. Most of them work already, but there are still a few kinks to work out. We also have plans on restarting our Survival world and launching a new 1.9 world. And since we’re hard at work on the ranking system, we might as well wait until that’s ready to go.
